A powerful upgrade

Vartex’s in-house control, called Vartex Smart Control for Washers and Dryers, is a technologically advanced replacement of the regular controls on washers and dryers. During earlier stages of the project, we had already converted a number of dryers. Now, now we have equipped all of the washers and dryers at USLaundry with Smart Control. This upgrade provides several exciting features that increase starting from the equipment’s efficacy and reliability. Smart Control allows laundry managers and operators to monitor their washers and dryers remotely. It keeps a real-time log of the washer and dryer’s settings, cycle time, and other relevant data.

One vital feature of Smart Control is that it connects all the washers and dryers to Laundry Intelligence Dashboard. It allows clients to keep track of their equipment and cleaning process at all times. USLaundry can now access detailed insights into their cleaning operations, such as the weight of the clothes they clean, how much water they use, electricity consumed, and more. The Laundry Intelligence Dashboard gives them an overview of everything happening during the cleaning process, enabling optimization to improve efficiency.

Hence, the chances of running out of detergents are significantly reduced. That’s smart.

€800.000 gas bill

Last year, the Dutch bank, ABN AMRO already warned the cleaning industry when it released its calculations. They examined the consequences for several sectors of the economy.

In particular, the bank examined the extent to which companies can pass on these higher costs. If they cannot, their profits will vanish. However, if they can pass these extra expenses on to their customers, their prices will rise. ABN AMRO predicts that Dutch companies will run into either scenario very soon. And don’t be surprised to find that other countries find themselves in a similar predicament.

On August 29th, RTL Nieuws (Dutch news) filmed at a laundry when reporting the outrageous energy prices. The manager told the cameras that they’re expecting a gas bill around €850.000 (instead of €250.000 a year earlier). A €600.000 difference is very difficult to overcome for a laundry.

A Reliable Temperature and Water level Sensor Saves Money

With all the information that’s swinging around, it’s hard to get grip on the situation. But what one needs in these times is clarity. Saving money can be easier than you might think. And it all starts with your washer’s temperature sensor.

Often, a washer and dryer’s PT-100 or NTC sensor have a deviation; especially when they get older, temperature sensors become less reliable. Unfortunately, they show a lower temperature than reality. Consequently, the machine heats up unnecessarily. This of course is a waste of valuable energy. The same applies to your water level sensor. If the water level sensor does not work properly, the washer thinks it needs to pump up extra water. Again, this is a waste of energy.

Validate Your Sensor

Luckily, you can prevent a higher energy bill easily. There are more ways, but the easiest way is to throw a logger into a batch. Often, detergent suppliers do this, but in these times, it wouldn’t hurt to validate your PT-100 or NTC sensor more often. You can save up to €1000 with this simple test.

As a result, you end up using an excessive amount of gas, which in turn leads to too much hot air blowing in nature. Also, with the increasing scarcity of energy, this results in extremely high energy bills

An infrared sensor is installed on an infrared dryer. This sensor ensures a shorter drying time, which actually dries the linen. In fact, an infrared dryer can save 40% time compared to a regular dryer. This way, the linen is not dried longer than necessary; thus, no more residue ends up in the environment and lower energy costs.

This forced the laundry to start all over. The determination and resilience of the team is truly admirable. The company continued to clean in a temporary site while the new plant was under construction. Finally, years after the disaster, the facility is finished, and the installation of the new equipment has started. And we’re very proud of the fact that Vartex is involved in supplying new equipment and software from the start.

The first phase of the installation has been finished. We’ve unloaded a part of the equipment and started installing them. US Laundry opted for several new machines and dosing system with controls by Vartex; the laundry will be supported by innovative Vartex software. This makes US Laundry the smartest laundry in the Caribbean. 

Smart Washers and Dryers

The heavy-duty Unica washer extractors are delivered with Vartex Smart Control for Washers, our universal control. Vartex is proud to have partnered up with Unica to coordinate our software for these heavy-duty machines. 

The Image dryers are fitted with Smart Control for Dryers. We’re swapping the standard controls with Smart Control for a more effective, efficient and environmentally friendly cleaning process. Here are the findings of a Schneider Electric case study at Elis:

US Laundry chose for Smart Filling to transfer detergents from IBC tanks to their storage tanks. Smart Filling features a safe 4 step QR scan process.

And the dosing of washer extractors happens with Smart Dosing. Vartex Smart Dosing installation is an all-in-one central dosing system for automatic dosing of liquid chemicals to washer extractors. Insights in Cleaning Process: Where all data come together

All the above mentioned products are connected to the Laundry Intelligence dashboard. The performance and activity from the washers, dryers, dosing system are all displayed in this platform. Moisture Sensor

Dryers can also be fitted with a moisture or humidity sensor. In this case, the machine stops drying when a certain percentage of humidity is reached. Dependent on the program, this percentage varies. A humidity sensor can be advantageous when dealing with delicate materials, such as wool.

So, why does Smart Control for Dryers let you dry with both a humidity sensor and infrared sensor? The answer is simply user-friendliness. Our Smart Laundry product range separates itself because of its universality. That means two things.

As the end of the year approaches, we would like to take the opportunity to reflect on the past year. Let us take you on a quick tour of 2021.

Girbau Washers Converted with Smart Control

We started 2021 with an important project. A large laundry in The Netherlands switched the standard operating system of 12 Girbau washers with Vartex Smart Control. In addition, we connected the machines to Laundry Intelligence, our IoT solution that makes data visible. We’re proud that this particular laundry is the first true Smart Laundry. Throughout the year, we continued to install Smart Control on many washers at different laundries. Since Smart Control is a universal control, clients can order the system for any of their washers, regardless of brand or manufacturer.

Thus-far, our clients have enjoyed the benefits of Smart Control and are happy with their new controls. We thank our clients for their trust in Smart Control.

The Effect of Shortages

During 2020, we started to hear about shortages and there were increases in prices. Companies shared warnings with their clients. This year, we witnessed the implications of shortages. Valves, for instances, were harder to get a hold of. And we all know of the sky-high prices of sea freight.

We like to maintain a positive outlook though. After rain comes sunshine; as time moves forward, we hope these shortages become less and less. Despite everything one thing is for sure: We always try our best to get our clients the best products and quickest delivery times. That’s why we’re here.

State of the Smart Laundry

Since 2016, Vartex has been committed to making laundry equipment smarter and more efficient around the globe. It started with Smart Control for Washers, the first universal control for washers. Simultaneously we developed the Laundry Intelligence dashboard (LI).

Since its inception LI has grown into a full laundry hub. It started as a tool for laundries to view the performance of their equipment in real time. And in the past year it has evolved into a place where you can order parts, check machine documentation, solve maintenance and more. Then, last year, we introduced The Vartex App, which is the first mobile laundry app.

In 2021, we updated the Vartex App with a live view of machinery. This means that now, just like in Laundry Intelligence, users can see the amount of water, gas, and electricity a specific machine uses at any given moment. Of course, the same applies to the weight of a certain batch.

Helping Laundries Dry Smarter with Smart Control for Dryers

This year we took yet another step in making the Smart Laundry a reality: We converted the first standard dryers with Smart Control for Dryers. It’s the first universal control for dryers. Among other innovative functions, Smart Control for Dryers allows users to dry with both an infrared sensor and humidity sensor (simultaneously). In 2022, we’re planning to roll out Smart Control for Dryers and the complete range of Smart Laundry products even further.

The Future

Without the feedback of our clients and partners, our Smart product range would not be as great and innovative. Our team is fuelled by our clients’ input. The same applies to our high standard of service. We look forward to keep working on the future of the laundry together.

Berekeningen ABN AMRO: Hogere Energieprijzen beïnvloeden wasserettes & wasserijen

Deze week deelde de ABN AMRO een analyse van de impact van de hogere energiekosten. De bank brengt geen goed nieuws. Zij onderzochten de gevolgen voor verschillende sectoren van de economie. Onder hen zijn de papierindustrie, zware industrie en voedingsindustrie, maar ook, je raadt het al: wasserettes. Hieronder kan men ook industriële wasserijen verstaan.

De bank heeft met name onderzocht in hoeverre bedrijven deze hogere kosten kunnen doorberekenen. Als ze dat niet kunnen, zal hun winst verdwijnen. Als ze deze extra kosten echter kunnen doorberekenen aan hun klanten, zullen hun prijzen stijgen. ABN AMRO voorspelt dat Nederlandse bedrijven binnenkort met een van deze scenario’s te maken krijgen.

Een betrouwbare temperatuur- en waterniveausensor bespaart geld

Met alle informatie die rondslingert, is het moeilijk om grip op de situatie te krijgen. Duidelijkheid en een praktische uitkomst is waar we baat bij hebben. Geld besparen is makkelijker dan je denkt. En het begint allemaal met de temperatuursensor en waterniveau-meter van je wasmachine.

Vaak heeft de PT-100- of NTC-sensor van een wasmachine en droger een afwijking; vooral als ze ouder worden, worden temperatuursensoren minder betrouwbaar. Helaas tonen ze een lagere temperatuur dan de werkelijkheid. Hierdoor warmt de machine het water onnodig op. Dit is natuurlijk een verspilling van waardevolle energie. Hetzelfde geldt voor je waterniveausensor. Als de waterniveausensor niet goed werkt, denkt de wasmachine dat hij extra water moet oppompen. Nogmaals, dit is verspilde energie.

Valideer uw Sensor

Gelukkig kun je een hogere energierekening gemakkelijk voorkomen. Er zijn meer manieren, maar de meest praktische is om een ​​logger in een batch te gooien. Vaak doen wasmiddelleveranciers dit, maar in deze tijden kan het geen kwaad om uw PT-100- of NTC-sensor vaker te valideren. Met deze eenvoudige test kunt u tot €1000 besparen.

Green Ambitions

Fortunately, awareness and greenambitions among laundries are growing. Partly as a result of incentives by the government, laundries and linen services are investing in a more environmentally-friendly cleaning process. We also noticed this when we connected a complete laundry to our Laundry Intelligence management information software and converted the washers with our in-house operating system, Smart Control. Since then, this laundry has brought the results of the TKT study to life. We would like to briefly explain how this laundry saves both money and the environment.

Save 34% Water

The TKT study shows that matching your machine’s water level to the actual load results in significant energy savings. The institute measures that water will be saved by34% when loaded with 45 kg of linen in a 68 kg washer. There’s one condition though: the water needs to match the load. Unfortunately, this is not the case in reality; in fact, coordinating water and load is not possible with standard machine controls.

Mismatch of Load and Water

Take an open-end washer with a maximum load of 50 kg. In this case, the machine will always use a standard water level for 50 kg; the standard control does not take the actual load into account. This is fine, if you load your machine with 50 kg. However, we all know that is not always the case.

What if you need to clean less linen than the capacity, and load the machine with 20 kg of linen? Well, the same water for 50 KG linen will be used. Obviously, this is inefficient and irresponsible: water is an unrenewable resource.

The Importance of Software in Cleaning Green

TKT reports that this discrepancy between load and water can only be straightened with the right software (read: control). That is exactly the purpose of Smart Control. With Smart Control you can easily tailor a cleaning program to your specific needs. The software is designed for an intuitive PLC from Schneider Electronic, which is easily equipped on the machine instead of the manufacturer software.

Match Made in Heaven

Laundries and linen services equipped with Smart Control can determine the water use, dosage, duration and dosage. As a result, the organization not only uses a responsible amount of water, but also gas and electricity consumption are within borders. In other words: if you wash 30 KG of linen with a 60 KG machine, you can still ensure that exactly enough water is used.

Dry Green

Washers are not the only culprits. Dryers with standard software often cannot dry the linen in the set time. What happens as a consequence? Right, the wet laundry goes back in the dryer. As a result, the dryer uses an excessive amount of gas. And where does that end up? That’s right: in nature.

Although the dryer needs to be heated, the undesirable side effect of an excessive drying time causes the earth to heat up. With Smart Control, the operators themselves set the right drying time for the linen: no longer than the laundry is dry and no shorter! This means that no surplus gas ends up in the environment.

Recognition of the Problem 

Searching for solutions starts with the identification and acknowledgment of the problem. Laundry Intelligence was crafted for this purpose. With Laundry intelligence, the manager can see the exact consumption and costs on his smartphone, desktop and tablet. After each batch, he can precisely see what the total costs (including consumption and manpower) are. And if the washer or dryer consumes more resources than necessary, the manager receives a notification. The load can then be tailored to your load in Smart Control.

Do less. Achieve More

The aforementioned study by TKT and the experiences of our customers show that cleaning ecologically can be as simple as saving natural resources. While the business saves costs, it also contributes to a cleaner environment. A nice example of doing less and achieving more; what else could you wish for!
